Trip to Ireland Offers Local Group
New Perspective on Disability Services
(August / September 2003)

Several months ago, a contingency of professionals traveled to Western New York from Ireland to tour various service providers and schools. In exchange, on Memorial Day, a small group of local parents and professionals skipped over "the Pond" for a reciprocal visit, with the goal of meeting with like-minded professionals/educators. The Parent Network's Susan Barlow was among that group.

Some of the sites visited included adult service providers, special needs public schools, and universities which provide support to students with disabilities. In addition, the group met with Ireland's Minister of State for Health and Children.

One of the trip's highlights was Kathy Sinnot, a noted advocate in Ireland. Not only did everyone in the contingent have fun, but all got a fresh perspective and a first-hand look at various strategies and best practices.
