For parents, students and professionals, the transition process can be strenuous and overwhelming. In an effort to lend a hand, the Western New York Transition Committee will be busy this fall/spring educating parents and professionals on this critical transition process, which begins for students at the age of 12. The organization will be hosting four "Transition Parent Nights." These events will offer a look at a number of different topics including the collaborative efforts between school districts and agencies to improve the often-difficult transition process. Running from 6 - 9 p.m., each session will be broken up into three distinct sections. Hour one will consist of an agency fair with a number of organizations' tables on display, allowing families/professionals to meet providers, ask questions, and receive detailed information about the many services that are available. Hour two will include a 45- minute overview of pertinent transition legislations and regulations. The final section will feature a pair of break-out sessions (participants will be able to choose two of 10 unique sessions to attend). Topics will range from Social Security benefits to effective college planning to day program options. Check the Parent Network of WNY calendar of events for specific dates or call us for more information.
