Dena B. Goldstein Story

Dena Goldstein was a 1994 Graduate of Amherst Central High School where she served for three years as a class office.  After graduating from high school, Dena attended American University and Buffalo State College. Born profoundly deaf, Dena learned to lip read and speak. Dena never let her deafness become an obstacle. She lived life with passion and was the first hearing impaired student to participate in the Outward Bound Program. Dena was known for her charisma, smile, loyalty as a friend, and athletic ability. Diagnosed with mental illness in her early twenties, Dena remained independent and active, continuing to demonstrate the same strength of character and courage that defined her personality. Dena died tragically at the age of twenty five in a car accident on February 16, 2002. Her indomitable spirit lives on through the Dena B. Goldstein Memorial Family Resource Initiative and a scholarship created in her memory by the Speech and Hearing Association of Western New York.

Dena B. Goldstein Family Resource Initiative and Library

In 2002,  Bruce and Betsy Goldstein, both tireless advocates for children with disabilities and the parents of Dena B. Goldstein, established the Dena B. Goldstein Memorial Family Resource Initiative to honor their courageous daughter.  The Family Resource Initiative serves as an information center for parents of children with disabilities and their families as it provides a library collection of books, videos, and other resource materials. The Dena B. Goldstein Family Resource Initiative is an invaluable resource to the community as it empowers families in the following ways:

  • Encourages parents to share current information and resources with other similarly situated parents
  • Allows parents to access current electronic and printed resources regarding:
    -
    mental and physical disabilities
    - special education
    -
    diagnosis and treatment of disabilities
Fosters knowledge and understanding of people with disabilities and special education
  • Highlights a legacy of self-advocacy that Dena B. Goldstein demonstrated
