Tips for a Parent Member

  • Introduce yourself as the Parent Member and introduce your role on the committee. “I am here to be sure you understand the process and answer questions.”

  • Talk to your district about communicating with the parent before the meeting – You can give out your number so the parent can call you or you can call the parent if they want to talk to you.

  • Be the greeter – go out to the hall before the meeting and introduce yourself

  • Let the parent know they can have a parent member attend a sub-committee meeting too.

  • Connect with the Special Education PTA or other PTAs in your district.

  • Be mindful of jargon being used. If jargon is used explain it or, better yet, ask the dumb question. For example – even if you know that a BIP is a Behavior Intervention Plan ask “What is a BIP?”

  • Watch the parent for bobble heading or blank stares – help them understand what is happening.

  • Use WE language – “How can we solve the problem?”

  • Ask the parent, “What is your most important goal for your child next year?” – What is one thing they would like to see their child do by the end of the year that they can not do now?

  • Ask the parent what their dreams and hopes are for their child.

  • Ask the parent what they do with their child to be successful – whether it is to teach them something new or to get through a behavior.

  • Ask what is it like when they do their homework. Ask if they have to help their child with their assignments.

  • Ask the parents what they think really worked well this year.

  • Ask if something that works can be added to the IEP as a management need.

  • Ask the parent if they understand, are comfortable or agree with the decisions.

  • Offer any helpful resources you are aware of in the community. For example, if parents are looking for a horseback riding or dance program, tell them about ones you or friends have used.
